Coloring for Adults is Relaxing

Who knew! Adults are starting to get back into coloring big time. Apparently research is showing that people find it very relaxing. I know I have heard this sort of thing from folks who have purchased my first volume of drawings (“400 Mornings: Artist’s Dreams – Pencil Sketches” Available here on Elena Santos in a recent article says:

(Coloring) generates wellness, quietness and also stimulates brain areas related to motor skills, the senses and creativity.

There’s more:

When coloring, we activate different areas of our two cerebral hemispheres, says psychologist Gloria Martínez Ayala. “The action involves both logic, by which we color forms, and creativity, when mixing and matching colors. This incorporates the areas of the cerebral cortex involved in vision and fine motor skills [coordination necessary to make small, precise movements]. The relaxation that it provides lowers the activity of the amygdala, a basic part of our brain involved in controlling emotion that is affected by stress.” (read the whole article here)

Cool eh? It’s very popular in Europe; in France they call it Art-Thérapie  and it is also starting to catch on in the USA too. Some call coloring books for adult “de-stress books”. My drawings are perfect to color. They love to be colored!
