Marti's "Ex Voto" folk art paintings are styled after similar pieces found throughout Mexico where they hang in the alcoves of various saints.

Typically these paintings depict an event in a person's life in which they feel they were transported from harm's way by the good graces of the favoring saintly presence.
You can see actual examples of such works by searching the terms "ex voto", "Retablo" and/or "exvoto" within eBay. There are usually a selection of real ones for sale.
There are places where so many grateful supplicants have had such items presented to their saint that apparently they just run out of room for the overspill.
We don't honestly know how we feel about that. Doesn't seem right somehow. And they are such charming pieces of human nature and gratefulness they are almost irresistible.

While scholars of the subject reserve the term "retablo" for works on tin that show traditionally inspired depictions of saints and their ilk, these pieces sometimes refer to themselves as such, and who are we to quarrel with them?

THESE ExVotos are painted on roofing aluminum (aka "tin") Their edges are carefully folded and bent over in back. They are painted with acrylic paints and sealed with a thick coating of oil based varnish.
