When Worlds Collide

Celebrity Mini meets latest creation!

Well, ok, maybe not worlds – maybe just passions! I’ve been exuberantly working with amazing new media clients all week and as a precious reward for time well spent on their various Missions to make the world a better place, I’ve allowed myself some hours in the studio. I’ve been working with the wondrously soft fibers given to me by a horse-loving friend who sent me bags upon bags full of first and second cuttings from some well looked after alpacas whom I think are a part of a program at a university where she lives in Massachusetts. I don’t know what they’re studying but their fiber is a study in sweet softness!

Massachusetts Alpacas Support Horses!

A friendly caveat of this perfectly amazing and generous gift was that I use some of the fibers

Who's Who in Equine

to help horses. Say what? How’s that gonna happen? Make them scarves? Beanies? Nope. Though those are fun ideas to be sure. Instead what I’m doing is making some pieces to sell where all the proceeds earned go towards helping fund a project for equine welfare. So this piece I’m calling “Hapi Hors” will 100% of her proceeds go towards funding a book I’m producing called “Who Who in Equine Compassion” (or Welfare – still working on the title). I’ve got it posted as an IndieGoGo fundraising project right here: http://www.indiegogo.com/whos-who-in-equine-rescue

Inventing Happiness

I’ve snuck in some felted this week and what a joy it has been! I throw an audio book on the iPod and assemble my “unicorn fibers” within easy reach and jump right in.

This latest piece reminds me of the way cartoonists used to draw animals in, say, the 1930′s or 40′s. There’s just something about the body shape and the eyes…. Here, see for yourself:

Little Dog Dawn

In case you’re curious – she’s for sale right here in my etsy store.

I’m wondering if you can tell why I love getting to live where I do from this pose? This is a typical summer morning here at DogTrot Hill. The rays pour through the trees that line the lane and the swell of the hill that rises up to our house gets bathed in this soft warm light. The view stops me in my tracks every time.

I believe some of the joy nature shares comes through my own work. Differently; through the ol’ “Marti filter” for sure – but then again the hummingbirds we share the space with are about as comical as anything I could hope to dream up.

As I mentioned a couple of days ago I had the opportunity to do something out of the ordinary in my felting. A friend saved a whole little bag full of her doggy’s fur for me to use in a soft sculpture. After sneaking peaks at the puppy-cam this spring of some Shiba Inus I have a new affinity for these Japanese cutie pies. Here’s the results of Sam’s donation to art!

The Wonderful fox-like RainBoBo

RainBoBo

I just finished the latest felted HapiLanian in my ongoing series and I’m excited with how she (he?) turned out! I used “unicorn fibers” (hand dyed alpaca blended with sparkly soft metallics). I’ve been working on getting the process of needle felting onto a nice armature just right and on this piece it turned out just riight!

With the just the right heft, this piece is 20″ long by 10″ wide and 10″ tall. Pretty big for a felted animal, the usually don’t go much beyond 6-8″. But this creature just naturally flowed into this size.

THE STORY

RainBoBo is a sort of a FOX-like being who comes from an imaginary land that intersects with our own reality with the sole purpose of adding joy onto the globe. You can read more about her land in the book “HapiLani: The Natural History of a Dream Land” available at amazon.com.

What a Happiness Waste

I spend way too much time comparing myself to others. You probably do too. We’re taught to do this from the moment we show signs of comprehension. Comparisons are demonstrated to us and advertising is lavishly designed to get this point across from every conceivable angle. No wonder I’m so good at it!

That’s why I’m focusing on some projects to help me get off this crazy treadmill and back into the place where I happily exist without spending a second thinking about what I might be lacking. Because that’s ultimately what comparing oneself to others shines a light on; lack. Oh no, not always. But mostly.

There is a right way to do it

Here’s an exception. This morning a friend posted a link to a post about a new book that shows the bedrooms of children from all over. Take a look for yourself. (link opens a nice NYTimes blog post with slideshow of a dozen images – some shown below).

Insider Info

What’s great about having an opportunity about getting a sneak peak into private spaces like this is the chance to look at the child and the bedroom and guess if we would have envisioned reality like this. From this we naturally compare our own sleeping quarters or that of our own children and draw comparisons. This is where it gets interesting. Maybe we believe these children are less happier than our own. Or maybe we think they’re more happy. But we also have an opportunity to consider maybe they are both happier and unhappier in different ways. At this point the comparison doesn’t really matter – because we come to know that how we feel about what we have or have made is entirely up to us.

Research illuminates the concept of comparison even further. Apparently once you get to what you consider the median point of wealth within your community no matter how much more is bestowed upon you – your levels of satisfaction and happiness do not rise! Not one bit. Check it out here. The World Database of Happiness Research web site.

My Goal

To let go of comparisons that decrease my happiness. So while I am obligated to have my work compared with other work in the process of jurying into art shows – I don’t have to own any bit of the related subjective opinions endemic within those comparisons.

I’ll post occasional updates on how extracting comparisons from my day to day life path is going. I’ll write about challenges, setbacks and everything else that might cause me to succeed or backtrack. After all, mine is an incomparable life. So is yours.
